Liam and Molly Sue had gone shopping that weekend, and today they showed up in their Sunday finest, primped and pressed and fresh off the rack. Molly Sue had chatted excitedly the entire drive into town, and Liam couldn’t help but share in her happiness, too.

The talk he’d had with Jennifer standing by her fridge, his decision to offer her a job, and her decision to accept—they all put him at ease, convinced him that this had been God’s plan all along. He’d brought Jennifer back into their lives to help Molly Sue move forward with hers, to rejoin school, make friends. The bubbly Sunday school teacher had reentered their lives at exactly the right moment, too—or rather, they’d reentered hers.

It wasn’t about love, not at all. God just needed a way to get Liam’s attention, and now that He had it, everything would be just fine.

“Good morning,” he said when he returned to pick up Molly Sue after the service.

“Hi, Liam. Good to see you both again,” Jennifer responded with a polite smile.

“Well, goodbye,” Liam said, turning to head back toward the parking lot.

Molly Sue had other ideas, though. She let go of his hand, crossed her arms, and refused to budge.

Liam turned back toward her and found her wearing an exaggerated smile despite her angry posture. “That was a really good lesson, Miss Elliott,” she told Jennifer loudly. “Will you come to lunch with us so I can ask you a few follow-up questions?”

Liam was absolutely certain his little girl had lifted those words directly from a phone call he’d had with a client the previous week. He couldn’t help but chuckle despite his discomfort.

Jennifer kneeled down to meet Molly Sue face to face. “And what questions did you have?”

Molly Sue scratched her chin in thought, then gestured wide. “I have so many questions. So, so many questions. That’s why I want you to come to lunch with us.” She turned back toward Liam and gave him an animated wink, scrunching up the whole left side of her face as part of the gesture.

Oh, she’s definitely up to something. Which of her Disney movies is she trying to bring to life now?

“I’m sorry, sweetie,” Jennifer answered, tucking one of Molly’s stray curls back behind her ear. “I already have plans for lunch today, but I’ll see you tomorrow after your first day of school, and we’ll have our special tutoring session. I’m really excited about that. Aren’t you?”

Molly Sue shrugged. “I guess.”

“Hey, kiddo,” Elise said, swooping into the classroom. “Why don’t you and your dad come with? A bunch of us are headed to Mabel’s for Jeffrey’s famous brunch buffet. We can easily squeeze in two more. What do you say?”

Liam watched as the youth pastor winked at her friend, much the same way Molly Sue had just winked at him. When would these two have gotten a chance to come together, and what on earth could they have joined forces to concoct?

“I don’t think so,” he said
